The Sew Crafty F.A.Q.

General

What the heck is this place?

I have never heard of these newfangled craft studios/sewing lounges…

Sew Crafty is the newest in a series of sewing lounges to sprout up across the country. Starting with San Francisco’s Stitch Lounge, the “urban” sewing lounge works by offering the community a space to get crafty without having to own expensive equipment or lug their sewing machines to classes. It’s a place where people can meet other people that share their interests and have fun taking classes or working on their own projects.

Sew Crafty is Houston’s first and we are proud to offer great classes, fun and craft-tasticness… yes, that’s a word or at least it should be.

Why should I come here and not just sew at home by myself?

When you sew with other people it is not only more fun, but it’s also a great way to learn – because you will share the studio with people of different skill levels you can pick up tips and tricks from the veterans.
There are some great tutorials online for learning how to sew or knit, but you just can’t beat the attention and help of a live human. Plus, we have fun in the classes – way more fun than having your husband/brother/dad leaning over you asking what the heck you are doing on the computer so long.

What kind of classes do you have?

Classes and Class Policies

Do I have to bring my own sewing machine?

No way Jose! Who wants to lug that beast across town? Not me and probably not you either. Sew Crafty is tricked out with 6 Janome Sew Precise machines – pimped out enough to do most anything you want, but easy to use for beginners.

If you would like to bring your machine, feel free but please come 15 minutes before class begins and bring your manual just in case things go awry.

Why do I have to bring my own supplies to some classes but not others?

For many of our sewing classes we send you a supply list with information on how much fabric/which notions to bring to class. This is because we want you to walk out the door with exactly what you wanted to make – picking your very own fabric is part of the fun!

Top

The class I want to take is full – is there a waiting list?

Yes! Each class has a waiting list and you will be notified immediately if a full class becomes, well, unfull…

Top

You don’t have classes in what I want to take – can I suggest a class?

Heck yes! We are always open to any feedback you have – Contact us and let us know what you would like to see!

Top

I signed up for a class, but I can’t make it – can I get a refund?

Due to the very limited enrollment in our classes and the special nature of our workshops, classes/workshops are non-refundable and there are no makeups. Please check your planner carefully before you sign up.

If you let us know at least 48 hours in advance, we will transfer you to another class of your choosing or credit your Sew Crafty account. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate any cancellations 48 hours or less before class is scheduled.

Of course, if you’re unable to attend your chosen class last minute, you may send someone in your place. Please provide us with that person’s name, phone number and email address as soon as possible and we will send them all the details!

I took a class with you guys and didn’t like it – can I get my money back?

Oh no! We want everyone to have a great experience at Sew Crafty, but we understand if you have discovered that DIY is not your cup of tea. Unfortunately, we cannot offer refunds on classes. If you would like a refund because you were unhappy with your experience at Sew Crafty, please let us know immediately and we will do our best to make it right!

Random Class Policies:

Classes are limited, so please sign up on our website to secure a spot or call in advance for availability. Payment is required to reserve your space - if you don’t want to sign up online, drop on by during our open hours and sign up at the front desk! Unfortunately, we don’t offer refunds for classes after the session has begun, but if you are not happy with the class come see us and we will try to accommodate you with another class or series. In the unlikely event that class is canceled by Sew Crafty, you will receive a full refund if you opt not to be moved to the next session or class. Materials are not included unless otherwise noted in the class description.

I’m mobility challenged - can I still take a class with you?

Absolutely! We hold our sewing classes upstairs (sadly, with this 1910 building there are no elevators), but can arrange to have a lesson downstairs for someone who is mobility challenged. Simply contact us at info at sewcraftyhouston.com and we’ll arrange one for you!

Sewing

I’m interested in sewing, but I’m a little intimidated – how can I test the waters?

Don’t be scared! Sewing is fun and we are here to make sure you learn the basics in a safe environment.

Our Intro to Sewing class is perfect for the absolute beginner – see our Classes page for more details!

Ok, I really liked my Intro to Sewing class and want my own machine, can you recommend one for me?

Absolutely! There are plenty of great machines out there and what you get will largely depend on what features you want vs. how much you want to spend. Feel free to talk with your instructor after class or contact us and we’ll be happy to help you out!

Knitting

Knitting looks really cool, what type of needles/yarn should I get for my class?

None. You know why? We give you some with the class. That’s right! You will receive your very own pair of bamboo knitting needles and a skein of yarn that is perfect for beginners when you sign up for our Knitting 101 class.

I want to buy some really cool yarn – where can I go?

We carry a limited supply at Sew Crafty, but you can check out other local and online shops for a bigger selection. Some favorites are:
Yarns to Ewe (an H-Town favorite!)
Etsy.com (great selection of hand dyed yarn – search for current offerings)
Yarn Pirate
