Making a Muslin

Posted by Sarah on Aug 11, 2008

Want to make something out of that beautiful fabric you purchases on vacation, but don’t want to jack it up on the first go round? Take the pattern for a test drive by making a muslin.

You might be thinking - isn’t muslin that cheap fabric? Yes, but it’s also the name for a sample garment made from a cheap fabric - so it’s kinda like the “Aloha!” of the sewing world. You might be thinking “Why would I want to make something twice? Seriously - twice?” but it is much better to get it all correct and fit the item to your body (via dress form) than it is to chop up that pretty fabric and make a mistake. Still with me? Check out this video about how to make a muslin…

Nothing says bride more than a beautifully made gown - especially a beautifully made custom gown. Rawr.

Enter Joan Shum. Hot dang these dresses rock my socks off! The prices are a little “Good Holy Goodness!” but hey - a custom gown? Made just for you? To me, that’s priceless!

I Heart Houston

Posted by Sarah on Aug 07, 2008

Houston has some hidden gems that make the heat, mosquitoes and humidity worth it...

1. The Houston Arboretum: Natural beauty, great trails and it’s FREE!

2. Cricket’sCreamery and Cafe: Gelato like you wouldn’t believe - and I’ve been to Italy!

3. The Houston Museum of Natural Science: Those dinos had had a special place in my heat ever since I was a kid. That place is magical. Except for the gift shop - that is evil. There are too many cool things and my wallet hates that place…

4. El Rey: Dang good food.

5: You. Seriously - you guys are the best!

Honorable mentions: Mai’s, Culture Pilot, The Harp, Leon’s for Vinyl Ranch, Patronella’s (swoon), La Carafe.

Yep - this is a great city indeed; unlike Austin, you have to hunt for the unique and extraordinary, which I think is part of the fun! What’s your favorite part of Houston?
